Downingtown Area Robotics (home of Team Sab-BOT-age) moves, reorganizes, grows

For the past five years, the Chester County Intermediate Unit’s (CCIU’s) Technical College High School (TCHS) has very generously supported Downingtown Area Robotics’ (DAR’s) educational program by providing us with a home in which the team and the program has been able to thrive and grow. But nothing lasts forever and important new construction at the TCHS means that DAR will be moving to a new base. Effective July 1st, DAR will operate out of 190 Exton Square Mall.

DAR is using this move as an opportunity to expand its program to serve younger students. When formed in 2011, DAR was an organization supporting FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC) team 1640 serving area high school students. Our move to the TCHS in 2013 allowed the foundation of DAR’s FIRST® Tech Challenge (FTC) team 7314, thereby broadening our service to include 7th and 8th grade students. Now, with the move to Exton Mall, six FIRST® LEGO® League (FLL) Teams will join the DAR organization. As a result, DAR will offer FIRST robotics programs for area students from 4th through 12th grades. DAR is also starting a 2nd FTC team.

Larry Dodds has graciously stepped up to the role of Head Mentor for FRC team 1640 (Sab-BOT-age). This is a role that Larry has effectively been filling through the 2018 season. FRC 1640 is DAR’s flagship.

Scott Featherman will continue to lead the FLL program.

George Abersold will serve as Head Mentor for FTC Team 7314; Scott Mengle will lead the new FTC team.

While DAR is leaving the TCHS, our partnership with the CCIU and TCHS remains important and strong. We continue to cooperate in hosting educational robotics events including the D-Town Dust-off FLL scrimmage, the Downingtown FLL Qualifying Tournament and a TechGirlz workshop.

DAR is not school-affiliated and its robotics programs are open to all area students. DAR is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit charitable organization.

FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology. FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that motivate young people to become leaders and innovators, and enhance their work-life skills.

Meeting GOALS
* Battery Research: Robot Batteries: Research best practices for maintaining our batteries. We may have inadvertently damaged our existing batteries in recent weeks.
* Mechanical: Robot fender is rubbing main tank tread on both sides. Need to extend spacer height to lift fender. This is interfering with repeatable autonomous runs.
* Electrical: Power supply wiring is longer than needed, would like to shorten where possible.
* Drivers: Verify that our recent debris pickup modification to prevent blocks from escaping works well and does not cause any other problems.
* Video Production: Organize this effort and plan for having a video for our Harrisburg qualifier.
* Wrap-Up: Decide and communicate meeting schedule for the remainder of the week.

BATTERIES
We are monitoring the battery performance. based on our research, we will no longer leave our batteries on the chargers over night.
We reconfigured our battery tester for NIMH batteries.

* Battery #1 performing well
* Battery #2 performing well
* Battery #4 performed well with 4 climbs to the top of the mountain.
* Battery #7 performing well

* Battery #3 is missing....

* Battery #5 yet to be recharged and tested.
* Battery #6 yet to be recharged and tested.

Media ( Video)
The team had some fun recording footage for our planned video to be used at our next competition. At the same time we were able to run lots on autonomous runs.

Mechanical
Mechanical: Robot fender is rubbing main tank tread on both sides. Need to extend spacer height to lift fender. This is interfering with repeatable autonomous runs.
Josh, Justin and Myles worked to resolve our mechanical issue.

The debris pickup is working without any observed issues. Our improvements seem to be working well.

Electrical
TODO, we did not get to today's electrical rewiring work. Will push this task to next meeting.

Programming
After our mechanical issue was resolved with the fenders rubbing, the program team worked to refine autonomous mode.

* Observation, With our recent update to the latest version of FTC software from FIRST, communications has been good, with no unexpected faults.

Red Inside Autonomous:
We relocated the starting position of the robot for "Inside Red" auto. We felt that our old starting position was too close to the center and might interfere with some alliance partners robots.
// Here are our steps (in order) that make up our rescue plan.
stepList = new ArrayList<StepInterface>();
stepList.add(new Step_Straight(10, DcMotor.Direction.REVERSE));
stepList.add(new Step_GyroTurn(32, Robot.TurnEnum.LEFT));
stepList.add(new Step_Straight(32, DcMotor.Direction.REVERSE));
stepList.add(new Step_GyroTurn(90, Robot.TurnEnum.LEFT));
stepList.add(new Step_FindBeaconBox());
stepList.add(new Step_TrackWhiteLine(Robot.AllianceColorEnum.RED));
stepList.add(new Step_UnloadClimbers());

Field Elements
New batteries for the beacon, YES!!! that helps us move along with testing.
BATTERIES
We are monitoring the battery performance. based on our research, we will no longer leave our batteries on the chargers over night.
We reconfigured our battery tester for NIMH batteries.

* Battery #4 performed well with 4 climbs to the top of the mountain.
* Battery #1 performed poorly, we will keep an eye on this one.

// Here are our steps (in order) that make up our rescue plan.
stepList = new ArrayList<StepInterface>();
stepList.add(new Step_Straight(10, DcMotor.Direction.REVERSE));
stepList.add(new Step_GyroTurn(32, Robot.TurnEnum.LEFT));
stepList.add(new Step_FindBeaconBox());
stepList.add(new Step_TrackWhiteLine(Robot.AllianceColorEnum.RED));
stepList.add(new Step_UnloadClimbers());

Field Elements
New batteries for the beacon, YES!!! that helps us move along with testing.
After our mechanical issue was resolved with the fenders rubbing, the program team worked to refine autonomous mode.

* Observation, With our recent update to the latest version of FTC software from FIRST, communications has been good, with no unexpected faults.

We relocated the starting position of the robot for "Inside Red" auto. We felt that our old starting position was too close to the center and might interfere with some alliance partners robots.

* Battery #4 performed well with 4 climbs to the top of the mountain.
* Battery #1 performed poorly, we will keep an eye on this one.

* Battery #4 performed well with 4 climbs to the top of the mountain.
* Battery #1 performed poorly, we will keep an eye on this one.

We relocated the starting position of the robot for "Inside Red" auto. We felt that our old starting position was too close to the center and might interfere with some alliance partners robots.

Red Inside Autonomous:

Battery 4 performed well with 4 climbs to the top of the mountain.

Electrical
TODO, we did not get to today's electrical rewiring work. Will push this task to next meeting.

Programming
After our mechanical issue was resolved with the fenders rubbing, the program team worked to refine autonomous mode.
We relocated the starting position for "Inside Red" auto. We felt that our old starting position was too close to the center and might interfere with some alliance partners robots.

Field Elements
New batteries for the beacon, YES!!! that helps us move along with testing.
Meeting GOALS
* Research: Robot Batteries: Research best practices for maintaining our batteries.
