Logos
While the logos are getting close to done, things like exact colors, pixel by pixel shapes (all uploads are low-res and non-vector), etc are not finalized. Mottos and font styles are not decided and all shown are only fillers. Still open to suggestions.

Remember we're looking for something simple, professional, eye-catching, unique, themed (with our name), and easily integrable into into all media.

The Cartoon Robot
Comments
*Worried about similarity to JJ Abrams
*Too complicated
*Looks sad/confused
*Too young
*Not distinctive/memorable--doesn't say "Sab-BOT-age" (could be anyone's logo)

The SpyGear
The Brand: Sabotage/Espionage
Why a Fedora?
*Fedoras have a long history on the heads of classy nonconformists. Think James Bond and Indiana Jones. Plays right to our name.
*It's also the logo for Red Hat Linux (largely for the above reason), highlighting our programming element.
*It's distinctive. Just like Daisy's headbands, wearing fedoras will make us more memorable and easy to recognize.

What's that Spark?
*It keeps the spy/sabotage theme without saying "we're going to explode your robot" the way an actual bomb does.
*It's electric! The "spark of inspiration" represents the electrical element of our team.
*It accents the logo and can makes our hat stand out.

Benefits of the Brand
*Simple - single base color with simple accents, 5 shapes.
*STEM Professional - clearly a gear (with a fuse and hat); classy yet unique, not overly youthful
*Distinctive - connotes Sab-BOT-age, doesn't look like it even could belong to someone else. Memorable, easy to explain uniquely.
*Branded - embraces spy/sabotage; we can theme team-given awards, events, handouts, etc around fedoras and spies. Already ties to FLL dogtags.
*Accentuating - adds a very appropriate element to our uniform. Hatband can also have nickname/job on it. Plus we can do hat tricks!
*Customizable - can be rolled into an O in Downingtown for DAR events, made event-specific (e.g. a LEGO piece hat), or tied into an FRC game (made from a basketball, ubertube, etc).

For Media Use
*Equal length/width; doesn't necessitate any white space/text wrapping
*Can directly replace any 0 or o without confusion or more room
*Easy to work into letterhead, etc, placed in many of our words where emphasis is needed (see examples above, others available)
*Recognizable even if partially/largely obscured or covered
*Easy to scale (full detail at <1/4" square)
*Distinguishable at long distances and in silhouette
*All lines are thick and simple (and can be more so for certain applications)
*Marketing hats and mini-hats plus bracelets, earrings, buttons, lapel pins and stickers, etc in the shape
*3 main elements (maximum 7 distinct shapes); monochrome can be laid out in 3 sections
*Major room on gear and minor room on hatband for additional information (e.g. event name and date, etc)

Comments
*Don't like the "swoosh" version. Non-swoosh version is cleaner & more modern.
*Hat should be different color from gear. (Sample to right or )

Comments
*Don't like the "swoosh" version, either. I agree with the comment above.
*Our logo should be clean, simple, and a good theme that we can carry through. I think this one would be a good option.
*We also need to figure out exactly what we want our theme to be ... something that is nice, classic, and still fun!

*Also alludes to FIRST logo.
*See benefits section.

See full style guide . Elements of the style guide (fonts, mottos, name style, etc) can be incorporated in other ways. Logo selection concerns only the logo itself (basically page 16 onward).

Comments
*Sorta bland
*Not memorable--looks like a lot of logos
*Doesn't "mean" anything
*Really detailed but not our style

Other Logos
Though no longer highlighted options (after the 14-Nov meeting), elements of several of these logos live on in current proposals, and they can be remixed and revised for new submissions. Note: though the "S-wrench" received the required level of support on November 14, it has since dropped out for aesthetic reasons--apparently its required height shrinks the "1640" and "_ab-BOT-age" in letterhead, etc by too much.

Mottos
Mottos are still open to suggestions, and those shown are not final. (e.g. "We Build Inspiration" could be "Building Inspiration", periods can be added/removed, capitalization can change.) Remember we're looking for something short and motivating that speaks directly to what we do (maybe in our brand) and will make sense to outsiders.
*NEW: Making anything possible // or // Making It Possible
*NEW: Synergy And Brainpower (SAB)
*NEW: Thinking outside the bot
*We Build Inspiration
*Building Our Future [used by several small organizations but not TMed]
*A Spark of Inspiration Can Lead to a Unique Creation
*Co-Operative
*The seemingly impossible is possible.
*Think ahead. [used by several small organizations but not TMed]
*Honest Espionage // or // Open Espionage
*Students Achieving Brilliance
Comments
*"A Spark of Inspiration..." is too long

Name Style
Though we're not changing our name, we can change the style by which we present it. Open to suggestions:
*Sab-BOT-age [current]
*//sab.bot.age [alludes to programming/web protocols]

*I think we should stay with the same name structure
*If we decide to change how we style it, I would suggest getting a webpage that uses it so it can link to us (and maybe have the new name website be our professional website? Just a thought if we decide to change.

*Alludes to Google Drive, The Verge, Microsoft Visual Studio and many other (primarily STEM) products and companies.

* (A different S-A-B acronym ...suggestions?)
*Current: Hope is Not an Engineering Strategy
*<strike>Removed: Make. Believe. [TM by Sony]
*Removed: Builders of Tomorrow [TM by LEGO, ironically]</strike>

Comments
*"Thinking outside the bot"
*"A Spark of Inspiration..." is too long

Name Style
Though we're not changing our name, we can change the style by which we present it. Open to suggestions:
*Sab-BOT-age [current]
*//sab.bot.age [alludes to programming/web protocols]
Great work by the whole team. This win qualifies us for the Championships in St. Louis.

Our qualification match record of 4-7-1 was underwhelming, as was our final ranking of 43 in a field of 53.

But we worked with 341 and 25 starting Thurday evening on the triple balance and made this our calling card during eliminations (as the 1st alliance). Our first quarterfinal match featured the very first triple balance at a MAR event. We went on to triple balance 5 times in 6 elimination matches.

Mentors Meeting
6-May-2011

B. Kellom, R. Wall, J. Kulik, R. Kulik, J. Christopher, J. Morganto, M. Rizzo, G. Deaver, J. Weissman, S. Weissman, S. Maley, C. McKown

Off-season competition plans:
:*This provides our best opportunity to train a new drive team
:*Also to get autonomous working
::PARC – Tunkhannock – 4-June – SAT’s day & no Julie C
::(BR) – Bridgewater – 11-June
::IRI – Indianapolis – 22 & 23 July
::Duel on the Delaware – October
::Ramp Riot – November
:*Sign up if we have student commitment

Suggestions/Observations:
:*We should investigate the 5th Gear drive simulation (Christopher & Maley) – but there is no pivot simulation
:*We had students who had no interest in building robots.
:*General lack of motivation and investment – reluctance to step-up – reluctance to question mentors
:*None of the students were leaders. Includes Captains.
:*We do not have two potential co-captains for next year.
:*Suggested we use and enforce the Scrum methodology. (Deaver)
:*Generate the plan the night before.
:*The lack of predictability in attendance interfered with team cohesion. Very visible in the minibot effort. No-one knew who (both mentor & student) would attend on any given evening/day. Students who worked with one mentor one day would show up and find that this mentor was not in (and visa versa).
:*Unpredictable arrival and departure times of students and mentors confounded attempts to hold integration meetings (can’t successfully run Scrum under these conditions) (Clem)
:*Suggested to move to a culture more like Miss Daisy’s, where students sign up and commit to being present at specific times on specific days. (Clem)
:*In the original team, Students were hand-picked by Paul Sabatino. We no longer have this filter and really have no access to teachers for recruiting students.

Behaviour
:*We need some rules (with consequences)
:*Behavior in the shop is a problem. A specific student cited. If effectively directed, this student is very productive. Otherwise, this same student is disruptive and prevents others from working effectively (Kellom).
:*A written and signed code-of-conduct was suggested (Weissman)
:*There needs to be an expectation that students will learn & work; less social club; less video gaming; less hiding in the kitchen.
:*Need job descriptions and guidelines for student leaders (Clem, Siri)
:*Some aspects of team cohesion and leadership started to appear after Philadelphia.
:*Nice team shirts and drive team hats suggested for improving cohesion.

Summer projects:
:*Programming & Test Board
:*Design Classes
:*3DS Max
:*Video team

Space
:*CCIU – Clem (7-June)
:*Lockheed – Morganto
:*Boeing – Kulik (post 501c3)
:*Champ sponsor list – J. Kulik

How can we increase exposure of students to other aspects of the robot?

Can we have a checklist for other areas?

How do we get more kids?
:*Student-driven recruiting
:*Demos to Boy/Girl Scouts
:*Demos at schools
:*A more professional shirt
:*Demos at Summer events
:*Demos
:*Back-to-school nights

Web-site
:*Lot of the kids find the web site confusing.
:*With VEX having its own web-site (and not kept current on the old site) convert site to FRC-only (Team 1640) with links to other DAR sites
:*Need to link the face-book team and u-tube page.
:*Maybe the face-book page can take on some of the social role (allowing more work during meetings)

Sponsors & Fundraising
:*501c3!
:*Finance Report
:*No matter where we present, we need to point out that we offer CAD & 3ds-Max and Photoshop & media.
:*We need a booklet sort of thing for potential sponsors. See the 1511 Sponsor book for reference.
:*Rizzo needs video-editing software.
:*Lightbulbs!
Juliebkhttps://team1640.com/wiki/index.php?title=User:Juliebk&diff=11571User:Juliebk2011-05-05T20:22:36Z
Juliebk: /* International Places I've visited */

FRC Team 1640 (team Sab-BOT-age) competed for its first time in FRC's Championship, held in the Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis MO. 27 students, mentors and family members made the trip.

352 FRC teams from 5 countries were divided into 4 divisions (Archimedes, Curie, Galileo & Newton) of 88 teams each. Winning alliances from each division met on the Einstein Field for playoffs, with Galileo's alliance taking the day.

Team 1640 did well, winning 6 and losing 4 of our qualifying matches to place 27th out of the 88 teams in Archimedes division. Our drive team was able to score a solid 4 tubes during teleoperated play (except for during the losing matches) and our minibot (Mighty Mouse) was 100% reliable and always placed either 1st or 2nd in the critical end-game (when deployed). Autonomous performance, alas, remained unreliable with <50% success. We were not selected for an eliminations alliance.

The pit turned out to be a dull place to work. Other than replacing our router (due to communications problems), absolutely nothing broke. The team's robot proved reliable and robust. We were, however, able to assist our pit neighbor, team 1690 from Binyamina Israel, with tools, battery chargers and materials to enable them to service their robot. We were not selected for an alliance.

The team set two very aggressive goals for 2011:
#Win 1 Regional Event
#Attend Championship event in St. Louis 27-30 April, 2011.

DEWBOT VII will be designed to meet the specific challenges posed by FRC's 2011 game: Logomotion.

To help meet these goals, the team did a number of things differently this year:
:* A new front-end design process to help us set clear, early strategic objectives and specification was instituted. We piloted this process in December.
:* For the first time, team 1640 built two robots: Prime and Deux. (Optimus) Prime goes to the competitions. Deux stays home for driver practice and as a software & hardware development platform. Duex graciously provides spare parts for competitions.
:* A (nearly) full-size practice field was set up at the Downingtown Robotics Center, enabling driver practice under realistic conditions.
:* Our mill was set up and used almost continuously during build season. The lathe also received more use this year than during the past six. With the help of new mentor Ben Kellom, accuracy became a 1640 hallmark. This year, interchangable parts really are!

DEWBOT VII Build
Build season is the heart of the FRC year. It is the 45 days during which the team's students and mentors put their hearts, minds and hands into designing and building a great robot. Paradoxically, the time seems both far too short and much too long.

Starting with a cold January 8th morning and ending up in the middle of an even colder February night. The chronicles of the DEWBOT VII Build season make interesting reading of how we all band together to perform an almost impossible task of designing, building and testing a robot in such a short time frame. Associated with each weeks build are pictures showing happy (and towards the end, tired) roboteers and mentors hard at work.

Design Details
Drive Train
:Following an long and animated debate on the evening of January 10th 2011, the team decided to use a Pivot drive-train on DEWBOT VII, rather than 6WD Tank. The final vote was 7 to 2.

:Pivot drive provides our drivers with the combination of extraordinary agility and maneuverability with power and traction. It is like combining the best attributes of the two most common FRC drive-trains, Mecanum and 6WD Tank, together in one robot.

:The balance is cost and resource management. Sab-BOT-age's Pivot Drive design controls the steering and drive for all four wheels independently through software. This makes for an extremely flexible drive systems (think fly-by-wire), but uses eight motors, eight motor controllers, a fair amount of the cRIO's processing capability, a lot of complex control software and a very large number of precision machined parts. It's not your Grandmother's drive-train. The team pioneered this drive-train in 2010, receiving the Xerox Creativity and (BR)2 Engineering Excellence Awards for the design & execution.

:In the end, the drivers and programmers were the most persuasive and adament champions of Pivot Drive. Chief Driver Carly was unwilling to give up a drive-train which provided the team with a critical competitive advantage in 2010 and appeared to offer the same in this year's game. The programming team was equally clear that they were up to the software challenge.

:The 2011 Pivot Drive benefits from a Value Engineering program the Team conducted during October & November of last year, and incorporates some significant improvements.

Mechanical Scoring
:Scoring is defined in the 2011 Game Manual. We made an Excel interface that calculates the autonomous, teleoperated, and minibot race scores to help us determine strategy.

:From a mechanical standpoint, there are two distict scoring systems:
::# A system to hang Ubertubes (in autonomous) and Logo Pieces (in teleop) on the Scoring Grid, and to collect Logo Pieces from the Human Players or pick them off the floor ( The Arm); and
::# A Minibot with its deployment system for scoring bonus points during the end game.

:The key strategic imperitives for the mechanical scoring systems were:
::* The ability to quickly & reliably score Ubertubes and Logo Pieces on the top row of the scoring grid;
::* Reliable deployment of a reliable minibot is essential;
::* We need to signal Logo Piece needs to the Human players;
::* The minibot & deployment should be fast (this is a race, afterall); and
::* We should be able to quickly and reliably score on all rows of the scoring grid.

Programming
Preliminary analysis of autonomous mode scenarios:

::* Autonomous scoring is essential (top row);
::* The area in front of the scoring grid will become conjested during autonomous; there is a premium for being the third robot on an alliance which can score autonomously (without colliding with alliance partners);
::* Contingency #2 ("Dead Reckoning") is deemed not possible due to the inability of the drive train to drive straight on its own (i.e. without sensor or human correction).
::* Edge following is desirable for the branching scenarios.

Mass
At Finger lakes, DEWBOT VII's mass at reinspection for play-offs was 113.4 lbm (127.5 lbm with Bumpers - 14.2 lbm for the 2nd set of Bumpers - no-one paid attention during initial inspection).
Baltimore Area Alliance FRC Workshop
:6-November-2010. Very helpful and educational. Our thanks to the BAA for their gracious invitation. (6) attended from 1640.

Move into Downingtown Robotics Center
:In November, Downingtown Area Robotics moved from the Micken Building into a 17,000 ft2 warehouse at 320 Boot Road, Downingtown. This is a great space for robotics, allowing a full-scale practice field. Alas, no sense of permanence. Our 6th home (and by-far very best to-date).
Practice Kick-off
:Team 1640 conducted a Practice Kick-off on 11 & 12-December 2010 in preparation of the real deal. A formal Design Process was introduced and tested during this exercise. 2006 Aim High game rules were employed for the robot basis, with the exception of the control system, which utilized 2010 standards.

:Game simulation using students as robots proved very effective and provided very good insights into the game play and requirements for winning matches.

:As always, the most difficult part of strategic decision making was in deciding which options not to pursue. Need to work on this.

CPR Training
:Nine students, mentors and parents from Team 1640 received CPR training and 2-year ASHI certification on 18-Dec at the Uwchlan Ambulance Corps.

Finger Lakes Regional - 3-5 March
:The team had a rough start, with some cRIO problems which took a while to resolve. In the end, however, we were selected for the 4th alliance and made it to the semifinals. We were defeated by the 1st alliance, who went on to win the Regional.

:We scored reasonably well in teleop, up to 4 logo pieces per match and always in the desired positions, but clearly could use more practice. There are mechanical and programming issues to resolve prior to the Philadelphia Regional as well.

DEWBOT VI was a solid scorer at Drexel. We generally scored several goals per match. Most scores were by kicking. We scored from all three zones. We did not score during autonomous.

Eliminations
Qtr 2-1: 1640, 87, and 639 (the 5th Alliance) beat 484, 1647 and 433 (4th Alliance) 8-3.

Qrt 2-2: Our alliance beat the 4th alliance 6-9.

We made the semifinals!

Semi 1-1: Our alliance lost to the 1st Alliance (365, 341 and 486; eventual champions) 2-11 after 87 broke down while defending against 341 in their home zone. Our alliance used our timeout and then the 1st Alliance donated their own timeout so that 87 could be fixed. Thank you 341, 365, and 486!

Semi 1-2: Our alliance lost to the 1st Alliance a close 7-8 after incurring a tough penalty when one of our alliance robots broke, extending outside of the bumper perimeter. Great competition!

Processes
We formalized some processes at Drexel. Immediately following each competition, we held a brief ' during which the Drive Team, Scouts, Videographer and pit crew review the competition and highlighted any problems. Repairs, modifications and changes in tactics were discussed and agreed upon. A Pit action plan was developed and executed.

In addition, standard pit actions were posted as a '. Checklist items were executed following each competition.

Our end-of-FRC-season ' is available. The Post-Mortem analysis is not a new process. We've done this before.

Schedule
The team drove to and from Drexel daily on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. On Friday night the Kulfases, McKowns, Walls and Moyers and Jen, Amanda, Brianna, Siri, Foster, Cole, Ben, Andrew, Kenneth, Jon, and Julie ate dinner at 30th Street Station and then attended Team 433's social at Chestnut Hill Academy.
Downingtown Area Robotics Team 1640 participated in the Philadelphia Regional at Drexel University (Philadelphia, PA) on March 25-27, 2010. The team won the Xerox Creativity Award and made the semifinals with the 5th Alliance (together with 87 and 639). This was our best performance at a Regional to date.
Matches
The drive team for all matches was Clem McKown (coach), Carly McKown (driver), Paul Klufas (operator) and Matt Klufas (human player) unless otherwise noted. The semi-final pit crew was alternatively Foster Schucker, Jon Davis, Scott Featherman and Siri Maley. Match videography was by Siri Maley, standard videography was by Jen Stanton, and photography was by Faith and Clem McKown.
Qualifications
Match 39: 1640, 321 and 2539 just lost 3-2 against 341 (champions), 2729 (quarter-finalists) and 709 (quarter-finalists) after 321 had mechanical difficulties. DEWBOT kicked a 3-zone goal, though!

Match 51: On Saturday, 1640, 486 (champions) and 1370 won 3-0 against 484 (quarter-finalists), 3151 and 2229.

Match 55: 1640 played with 1218 (quarter-finalists) and 1980 (quarter-finalists) to win a 9-1 blowout against 816 (quarter-finalists), 834 and 321.

Match 65: 1640, 3151, and 423 (quarter-finalists) lost a hard 8-4 against 204, 1391 (quarter-finalists) and 1647 (quarter-finalists).

We finished the qualification matches ranked 17th of 44 with a 6-3-0 record and were the first pick of the 5th Alliance.

Seeding Score: 123.00 (highest was 164.00) - up from 51 at FLR

Coopertition Bonus: 46.00 (highest 68.00) - up from 6 at FLR

Hanging Bonus: 4.00 (highest 16.00) - up from 0 at FLR

We danced (almost all of us, in fact), talked, and generally made merry. Thanks for a great time, Team 433!

The Steering Committee is the overall management of the Downingtown Area Robotics Organization. It is made up of the Senior Mentors from the FRC and VRC teams and the Captain(s) of the FRC team. The intent is manage a higher level of leadership and not place all the decisions on the head mentor.

The Steering Committee is a forward looking group planning for the build season, regional events, off season events, demonstrations, etc. We are the planning team for capital investments for all the teams.

Except for January and February we meet on the last Friday of the Month.

How we work
For the monthly meetings we have a standard agenda that we follow. Additional topics are posted on this page along with the minutes of the prior meetings.

During the build season the committee will meet once a week to discuss the management of the team. The intent is that the individual teams (mechanics, drive train, electronics, programming, game play, travel / logistics) will work out their plans. The steering team goal is to make sure that there are no big issues. Most of the members of the steering team are also on a build team.

Since there are a number of high expense items (backup cRio) or large expenses related to regional travel during the build season the hope is the weekly meetings will allow decisions to be made quickly.

Agenda Topics for the meetings
* Finance
* Robot technical issues
* Upcoming dates (six month outlook)
* Sponsor information
* Mentor information

During the off season the committee will meet once a month to discuss issues. All meetings are open to all team members, mentors and sponsors.

The Steering Committee meets the last Friday of the month at the Downingtown Educational Center. A quorum is 4 mentors and 1 of the two student members.

At the May 29, 2009 meeting, the Committee voted to set the length of the Committee Chairman's and FRC Officers' terms from June 1 to May 31 each year.

* Finance
* Robot technical issues
* Upcoming dates (six month outlook)
* Sponsor information
* Mentor information

Organization
Under the Steering Committee leadership, technical oversight of the FRC Team is provided by the Design Team, which coordinates the work between the different sub-team disciplines (CAD, mechanical, electrical, and programming). The Design Team was created in the 2009 build season. Daily build season oversight was conducted by the project managers on the Design Team via punch-lists and daily objectives. Many non-technical aspects of the Team are administered by support staff members, both mentors and students.

A critical dimension of Team operations is Fundraising. No money, no robots!
