Jump to: navigation, search

There are 2 divisions 104 registered teams. While we are taking a number of sophisicated robots, the competition will range from protobots to machines that can beat "677" This is a list of things that you need to plan for and need to do.

What makes this a successful trip for you? What are your goals? The VEXmen are 7 out of 104 middle school teams. Do we all have to win trophies to have fun? To feel good?

Our expectation are to go and be amazing. To play every match and win some. We will play kids from every state and countries from around the world and show them we are just as good. We belong.

Our aspiration is to win. Win trophies for the club. Win the tournament. Win the Excellence award.

We should dream big but we should have a mindset that there may be better teams out there.

You should plan to learn something,be safe and to have FUN

Before you go

Make sure your robot is LESS THAN 18x18x18.

Make sure your program is on a USB stick.

Have a checklist!

Things you will check every time before the robot leaves the pits:
Replace the battery

Plug the battery in to both the Cortex and motor expanders
USB Key plugged in
etc
Things you will do when the robot is on the field
Battery packs plugged in?
Robot turned on
Joysticsk plugged into the new field control?
Joysticks turned on?
etc.

Work the checklists!!

What to expect at the competition:

Wednesday

Inspection and Pits are open. Bob will register the robots

If you can, stop by the venue. You should be able to go find our pits in the middle school area, we are all together in one large pit.

If you have your robot: Get it ready for inspection! Repair any damage in shipment, fix loose screws, wires, etc.

Get the robot inspected as soon as you can. Lines will be long, go early.

Once you are inspected walk around the venue. Find the fields, find the restrooms, food locations, etc. Go see the other robots in their pits. Try to find the teams you will play with and introduce yourself.

Do not leave the pits unattended. Come back at the time you ageed to.

At night make sure the pits are cleaned up. The robot can stay overnight, take the laptops with you.

Thursday

If you have not passed inspection do it now!

Do the skills challenges! Each robot gets two tries. Remember that they are posting your scores, the other teams will be using this as a sample of what you can do in a match.

If you are not working on your robot or meeting with other teams you should be watching the other teams and scouting them. We will have scouting forms to fill out.

Judging - going on all the time. they are everywhere. What do you know about the robot? Answer everybody the best you can about your robot. Show them your engineering notebook.

Keep the pits cleaned! We are sharing space, there are seven robots in space for 5. So it's important that we not leave parts laying around.

Friday

We meet early at the pits and go to opening ceremonies together. We should sit together as much as possible. The two color shirts will stand out in the crowd, the more of us together the bigger we will be.

Matches run all day. You'll have about 40 min to an hour between matches.

Work the checklists!!

If you have not completed the two skill challenges do them today

Alliance Selection You do not make deals before the Qualification matches are over with anyone.

If you are a captain or a close enough that you may become one check with Bob (and if you can't find him talk to Foster) about your plans. We will not tell anyone what to do but we do want to know what you are planning.

If you are eliminated go play in the practice area with someone from across the country or world! Find someone to go play with, last year we played with New Zealand in a number of matches and it was great!

Division awards finals and closing ceremonies - again we need to sit together!!! They will be long!!!

Clean up pits pack up after the event. Everyone needs to make sure everything gets back to the cars. Don't assume that someone else will take care of it!

At all times

We should sit together as much as possible. The two color shirts will stand out in the crowd, the more of us together the bigger we will be. Your behavior will be seen by judges and can impact the award decisions for every team.

"It's nice that you are important, it's more important that you are nice"

Sportsman like to all teams at all times!

No boasting designed to make another team feel bad
Good - We have an awesome robot here's what it can do
Bad - We have an awesome robot - better than yours, which sucks.
Always shake and and thank alliance partners before match.
Always shake hands and thank opponents after match. (while scoring is happening. )
Be careful not to over do the victor cheers or screams of defeat!

No running, fooling around, being a general nuisance to anyone. There are 3 days and plenty to do. If you need something to do ask.

Do not do things unrelated to the event - computer games, ipod, iphone, DS. (Most importantly, don't let Foster see you, he will take your games, etc away.) If you are not engaged than leave. Don't make us look like we are not glad to be at the event.

Take the time to watch as much of the other teams matches as you can. Not possible to do this for everyone but important to have a crowd when we can.

Cheering often. Showing spirit is important. Wear face paint. Make your hair crazy. WE ARE HERE TO BE NOTICED! Option to make use of the team brand. What does your character look like?

Make sure that you eat and get something to drink There are lots of exciting things going on, it's important that you keep your energy up.

VEX can also use more volunteers.

Parents - help enforce the no running, etc rules. Make sure your kids are eating and drinking.

Bob says "I am one person. I will be their for you but I can't answer questions from 50 people for 3 days. Only the 7 team captains should come to me with questions/help. The rest of you plesase ask the 7 team captains."

Cheryl can help but is volunteering.

Foster is the manager of the Middle School Division. He should be either at the Middle School playing fields or at the VEXMen pits. If some kind of disaster happens, find a VEX offical and have them track Foster down, they will know how to find him.

   See you at Disney!
