Downingtown Area Robotics Team 1640 participated in the Chesapeake Regional at the United States Naval Academy (Annapolis, MD) on March 19-21, 2009. Despite ranking 36th out of 55, the team proudly won our first regional award, the Rockwell Automation Innovation in Control Award.

Matches

Match 7

On Friday, 1640 played with 229 and 1980 to squeak out a 34 to 32 victory over 1656, 1748, and 203.

Match 14

1640 played valiantly with 88 and 1626 but lost in a close 54 to 48 to teams 40 (who ended the competition ranked 3rd), 339 (ranked 25), and 1933 (ranked 49).

Match 19

1640 along with 686 and 1727 won an impressive 54 to 34 victory over 2546, 53, and 1893.

Match 32

1640, 768, and 467 lost in a difficult 67-58 to the impressive alliance of 1980 (ranked 21), 2377 (ranked 24), and 2641 (ranked 9).

Match 44

1640, 379, and 134 lost in a hardly contested 52-40 to 2866 (ranked 4), 1884 (ranked 30), and 527 (ranked 10).

Match 51

On Saturday, 1640, along with 2534 and 836 beat 1230, 190, and 2537 in a close 56 to 48 match.

Match 62

In the team's last match, 1640, 1389, and 614 lost to 752 (ranked 28), 2483 (ranked 27), and 2849 (ranked 40) by 24 to 36.

Schedule

The team arrived in Annapolis on Wednesday night, March 18th. After passing inspection and practicing on Thursday, most of the team enjoyed a night off and dinner in Annapolis. The core programming and pit crew ( Frank Stumpo, Paul Klufas, Clem McKown, Foster Schucker, and Siri Maley) stayed to refine the autonomous and targeting programming and add some finishing mechanical touches and calibration. The pit crew then enjoyed a fantastic dinner at Famous Dave's. On Friday, the team attended the unofficial Chesapeake Social held by Team 75. On Saturday, after finishing our last match at 11:00AM and eating lunch at USNA, the we seriously debated leaving for home. Fortunately, we did not, because that afternoon at the award ceremony we won our first regional award. Those in attendance will never forget the amazement and pride we felt when the judges explained, "Here is a robot that doesn’t know it’s math, 6+1=3."
