Unlike FRC, there is no 'stop build day' when the robot has to be finished; teams can work on their robots up to and during competitions.

Competitions are held on a 12 x 12 ft field with two alliances of two robots each competing. Robots must fit into an 18" cube at match start. Teams are typically capped at ten students.

Downingtown Area Robotics launched FTC Team 7314 for the 2013-2014 competition season.

The National Association of Secondary School Principals has placed the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) on the NASSP National Advisory List of Contests and Activities for 2015-2016.
