Clem McKown - Head Mentor FRC Team 1640

Clem McKown
I have been a mentor for FRC Team 1640 starting with the 2006 (Aim High) season. Presently, I serve as Head Mentor for the FRC Team and Chairman of Downingtown Area Robotics.

Key competencies which I bring to FRC are Project Management, Team Leadership, Mechanical Design, CAD skills and perserverence.

For my day-job, I am Director Business Development - Thiochemicals for Arkema, Inc., based in King of Prussia PA. I have worked for Arkema (and predecessor companies) since 1985, starting as a Process (Chemical) Engineer. My career in Arkema has been focused on developing new products and businesses, both from a technology and business perspective. I have a passion for creating new products and businesses. Arkema has graciously allowed me to pursue this passion. I thoroughly enjoy my job and feel myself fortunate to have a career so aligned with my passion.

I studied Chemistry at SUNY @ Stony Brook and Chemical Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark NJ). More recently, I've completed the Technology Management Program at CalTech's Industrial Relations Center. I teach Arkema's New Product/Process Development Process (called ASAP) within the company.

I have been granted (7) Patents, all associated (in some way) with atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) coatings on glass. I was a leader in the develpment of Arkema's successful flat glass coatings business. The business is based on applying thin, transparent, energy-saving, low emissivity (and electrically conductive) (Certincoat®) ceramic coatings to glass. The coating process is integrated into the the glass manufacturing process. Low emissivity coated glass can reduce building's heating and cooling energy requirements by more than 30% vis-à-vis uncoated glass. These coatings are also used as transparent conductors (electrodes) for certain types of photovoltaic cells.

From 1994 to 2005, I served on the Program Committee of the International Conference on Coatings on Glass, Co-chairing the atmospheric-pressure sessions. I remain on the International Advisory Committee.

In 1994, received the Elf Innovation Award from Elf Aquitaine S.A. (a parent company of Elf Atochem, an Arkema predecessor company) for the successful commercial development of low emissivity coating technology.

In 2004, I was awarded the Yanzhao (燕赵) Friendship Award from the Hebei Provincial Government, Peoples Republic of China for the successful startup of the world's first turn-key on-line low emissivity coating system at our customer's (China Yaohua Glass Group) plant in Qinhuangdao (秦皇岛), China.

In 2006, received Arkema Inc's Thiochemicals Above and Beyond award for the successful transfer of sulfonyls manufacturing to a new platform.

I am currently leading the global development of Paladin®, a pre-plant soil fumigant which effectively replaces methyl bromide in many applications. Methyl bromide is a Ozone Depleting Chemical banned under the Montreal Protocol, which remains in use due to absence of effective substitutes. Paladin is dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), a chemical produced naturally as part of the atmosphere's sulfur cycle and utilized by allium (onions, garlic) and brassicaceae (cabbage, broccolli, radishes, mustard, horseradish,...) to control predation. DMDS is contained naturally in many foods and is an approved food additive in both the US and Europe. Paladin® was granted registration in the US and Israel in 2010, by Morocco in 2011 and by Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon in 2012.

In 2011, I received Arkema Inc's Chairman's Award and the Paladin® Team received Arkema's Innovation Award for the successful registration of Paladin® and launch of this new business. Arkema globally awards this to only one team per year. A documentary was produced for (French) television highlighting this innovation.

I was among eight members of Arkema's Certincoat® team to be awarded the American Chemical Society's 2012 Hero of Chemistry award for scientific discovery, technical development, and commercial implementation of Atmospheric Pressure Chemical Vapor Deposition technology for the production of high performance window glass.

mài kāng wēi (迈康威) is my given Chinese name, which I have used here as my user name. During the 2003-4 period, I worked for about a year and a half in Qinhuangdao.

Hobbies are photography, bicycling and (of course) mentoring robotics. I have useful language skills in German and Mandarin. I am deperately working to learn French.

I am the Father of daughters who have now graduated from the Downingtown District. All have particpated in robotics. My eldest, Amber, together with Paul Sabatino, brought me into robotics. I'm afraid I'm hooked now, even though my daughters have moved on to University (all at RPI).
