I have been granted (7) US Patents, all associated (in some way) with atmospheric-pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) coatings on glass.  I worked in Arkema's Glass Coatings business for 20 years, and was a leader in the develpment of Arkema's successful flat glass coatings business.  This business is based on applying energy-saving, low emissivity (Certincoat®) coatings to glass during the the glass manufacturing process.  Use of Low emissivity coated glass can reduce building heating and cooling energy requirements by more than 30% vis-à-vis uncoated glass.

From 1994 to 2005, served on the Organizing Committee of the ''[[http://iccg8.iccg.eu/ International Conference on Coatings on Glass]]'', Co-chairing the atmospheric-pressure sessions.

I am currently leading the development of Paladin®, a pre-plant soil fumigant which effectively replaces methyl bromide in many applications.  Methyl bromide is a Ozone Depleting Chemical banned under the Montreal Protocol, which, however, remains in use due to absence of effective replacement. Paladin is dimethyl disulfide (DMDS), a chemical produced naturally (primarily via the metabolism of the essential amino acid ''methionine'') as part of the atmosphere's sulfur cycle and also produced naturally by ''allium'' (onions, garlic) and ''brassicaceae'' (cabbage, broccolli, radishes, mustard, horseradish,...) crops to control predation.  DMDS is contained naturally in many foods and is an approved food additive in both the US and Europe.

Clem McKown - Mentor FRC 1640 (2006-); Head Mentor FRC 1640 (2008-2018); President DAR (2011-2023)

Clem McKown
I have been a mentor for FRC Team 1640 starting with the 2006 (Aim High) season. Since 2008, I've served as Head Mentor for FRC 1640 and President of Downingtown Area Robotics. Our FTC program was launced in the summer of 2013. The key competencies which I bring to FRC are Project Management, Team Leadership, Mechanical Design, CAD skills and perserverence. Following the 2018 competition season, I stepped down from the Head Mentor position, remaining as Design Mentor.

I studied Chemistry at SUNY @ Stony Brook, Chemical Engineering at New Jersey Institute of Technology (Newark NJ) and completed the Technology Management Program at CalTech's Industrial Relations Center.

I am retired. In my previous day-job, I was Director Business Development - Thiochemicals for Arkema, Inc., based in King of Prussia PA. I worked for Arkema (and predecessor companies) from early 1985, starting as a Process Engineer, through the end of 2019. My career in Arkema has been focused on developing new products and businesses, both from the technology and business sides. I have a passion for creating new products and businesses, which my job allows me to pursue.

My user name, mài kāng wēi (迈康威) was my given Chinese name. During 2003-4, I worked for about a year and a half in Qinhuangdao as a Project Manager.

Hobbies are photography, bicycling and (of course) mentoring robotics. I have useful language skills in German and Mandarin and am studying French.

I am the Father of three daughters who graduated from the Downingtown Area School District. All have participated in robotics. My eldest, Amber, together with Paul Sabatino, brought me into robotics. I'm afraid I'm hooked now, even though my daughters have all graduated from University (all from RPI).
